During Pubcon Las Vegas 2011 Hotels.com global SEO director Shahid Awan sat down with Pubcon video content producer Vanessa Zamora to discuss what a typical day looks like for him at the office. Although challenging, Awan said he enjoys his job, and a typical day consists of him managing his SEO stakeholders including product, development, his immediate team and/or the agencies he works with. Shahid revealed that he tries to have a game plan on a daily if not weekly basis, to define his goals for the week and to do his best to reach those goals. He said he is currently working with 10-12 agencies globally and in order to maintain success in working with them he does plenty of preparation before engaging. He has worked on both the client and agency side, which gives him a particular insight and understanding in working with and from both sides. Clients need to understand that if you are an in-house SEO you need to do your homework before engaging with any agency, Awan stressed. And if you want to get the most out of your agencies you need to give them as much material as possible, Awan added.

During his Pubcon session "Getting the Most out of Your SEO Agencies," Shahid said he planned to reveal some golden nuggets of information, including how he reports with his agencies at an enterprise level, but something he said can be applied at any level.

Shahid said he most looked forward to Pubcon for the networking and learning, and noted that he was to be at his first Pubcon as a speaker, and in Las Vegas for the first time. Although Shahid has been in SEO for a long time, there is constant learning to be had, Shahid said, and although he is not an expert in every area he does aim to excel in at least one or two areas of expertise.
