Akamai Marketing’s Tara Coomans on Social Media Strategy and Trends

posted on, Feb 2, 2012

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Send Gmail Post to LinkedIn Post to StumbleUpon

Pubcon video content producer caught up with Tara Coomans, head brainstormer at Akamai Marketing for this Skype video interview about social media and Honolulu, Hawaii. Coomans first discussed the social media campaign that she is most proud of because of her ability to overcome time restraints and create a successful campaign. Her client was part of a high-end retail location in Hawaii, and Coomans was brought in on the tail-end not leaving time to do the prep work typically necessary for the greatest social media campaign success. The objectives of the campaign were to drive traffic to a VIP event that was a precursor to a three-day sales event, so Coomans took existing content, developed several Twitter hashtags and created a small campaign with that they had. They shared videos relevant to the organization and product as a way to engage potential customers, Coomans said, but no custom content was used because of time restraints. The end result suggested the use of social media equates to more conversions as the clients' Facebook audience grew by about 80 percent and 70 percent on Twitter through best practices, engagement, and a little bit of strategy. 80 percent of RSVPs for the VIP event were a product of social media channels and they were all new customers, Coomans noted. What was learned, according to Coomans, was that if you take a strategic approach and do some planning, social media can have a direct impact on business. Coomans was also able to attribute direct sales to social media, often a challenge when trying to determine last touch attribution with regards to digital marketing.

Get the Flash Player to see this content.

Coomans is responsible for creating headway in determining a return on investment (ROI) for social media, and she revealed that one of the hot topics surrounding that includes the influence of word-of-mouth and determining how to track and value some of those pieces. We know that customers, clients, and potential partners don't always act immediately when they see an offer, a promo or even your brand, so we want to create a time-line for how those touch points affect the process and also the value of word-of-mouth, Coomans noted. It's a little like building on the influencer concept, just as they have more ability to reach a wider audience, but which doesn't in and of itself always have a lot of value, Coomans added. Trying to identify ways for companies to value their social media efforts with an eye toward ROI with that word-of-mouth piece is what Coomans said she hopes to accomplish. Research shows word-of-mouth is truly valuable to ROI and it's an important element if you are taking a long-term approach to social media, so while you might only look at it in the context of a campaign, it should be something that you continue to track post-campaign so that you really get a view of the ins and outs of the campaign's effectiveness, Coomans said. Coomans was contacted to be a tester for a new product that will help with determining the ROI of social media and is hopeful that in the next year or year and a half digital customer relationship management (CRM) will start to become the secondary leg behind the analytics of social media. “I think we are headed in that direction and that is going to make the ROI results more clear for businesses,” Coomans said.

In addition to the social CRM piece, trends in 2012 according to Coomans include the rise of gaming by way of Facebook apps and engaging people in a fun and stickier way then we've seen in the past. Video is also going to be a huge piece of content, Coomans said, and I also think we can't discount the fact that mobile has a place permanently in our pockets. A study noted by Coomans releaved that smartphone and tablet digital consumption will take over our desktop in he next 10 years. The key takeaway, said Coomans, who also thinks that when you get on a smart phone or tablet you engage more with social media because it's more immediate and accessible. That will directly impact the use of social media and the number of people who are using it regularly, including sites like Twitter and Foursquare, Coomans said.

In conclusion, Coomans suggested attendees of Pubcon Paradise taking place February 13-15 in Honolulu, Hawaii try Morimoto restaurant on Waikiki. Head chef Morimoto, known for his presence on the Iron Chef television show, loves Hawaii, and Coomans was told it's not unusual to find him in the kitchen at the restaurant. The other thing, according to Coomans, is that Hawaii is a mixed blend of cultures and they have a lot of different foods. If given the chance, Coomans encouraged attendees to try a spam musubi, which she described as warm, salty tasty goodness that serves well as a post-beach snack. Lastly, Coomans suggested attendees try plate lunch, a Hawaii staple consisting of macaroni salad and kalua pork, high in carbohydrates and meant to push you through the day.

Alex Pyatetsky of The HOTH Shares Link Building Strategies

posted on, Jan 27, 2012

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Send Gmail Post to LinkedIn Post to StumbleUpon

Pubcon video content producer Vanessa Zamora caught up with The HOTH co-founder, Alex Pyatetsky. The HOTH, an outsourced search engine optimization (SEO) link building company for agencies and publishers, has been in business for just over a year and has already completed work on several thousand campaigns providing links based on URLs or targeted keywords provided by the client. Additionally, Pyatetsky shared that the company is working on the first ever American copywriter-powered end-to-end link building product that will be out in the next few months.

Get the Flash Player to see this content.

Pyatetsky shared a link building pyramid based on the food pyramid model, broken up into three parts and intended to provide a balanced approach to any link building campaign. The first and most broad level is the "friends, family, and fools" category, wherein Pyatetsky suggested the first step to link building is to contact those within your network to request a mention in their blog roll for the sake of getting some kind of foundational authority. This category includes investors, stake holders, industry trade groups, vendors and family member websites, Pyatetsky added. The second category are links acquired by "online activity". This category includes targeting relevant blogs by following them with an RSS reader and commenting once a relevant article is published, Pyatetsky said. For greater impact, instead of commenting using a targeted keyword in place of your name, Pyatetsky suggested listing your name and company so that in addition to gaining a link back to the corresponding website you are also more likely to make the blogger familiar with who you are which can potentially lead to more marketing opportunities. By creating intelligent and well-thought-out comments that reflect well on the blogger, not only is a person able to gain respect from that blogger, Pyatetsky shared, but this can also lead to guest post opportunities that often lead to recognition, PR, and more exposure for your brand. The only problem with the second category of link building is that it's labor-intensive. The top category of the link building pyramid is where the extremely precise, aggressive, scalable link building tactics take place, Pyatetsky said. The HOTH and social bookmarks provide users the ability to target what website pages to target, target specific keywords, and build links more quickly and efficiently, Pyatetsky said, who added that the HOTH provides a solution that provides access to content created by actual writers so the links have relevant affiliated content. It takes all three parts to form an effective link building strategy, Pyatetsky concluded.

Large Scale In-house SEO Tips by Microsoft Search Marketing Director

posted on, Jan 24, 2012

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Send Gmail Post to LinkedIn Post to StumbleUpon

During Pubcon Las Vegas 2011 the conference's video content producer Vanessa Zamora sat down with Alex Volk, search marketing director at Microsoft. Volk said there is no one typical day leading a large-scale department at a company like Microsoft, but ever since he started this practice it's been about staying on top of what's going on in the business, figuring out where the biggest opportunities are to have an impact and focusing on successful strategies with the things his team does go after to have the best results. There are 100 times as many things that his team wants to do that they can't, so they just have to stay focused on what it is they can, Volk said.

One of the challenges, according to Volk, is keeping up with all of Microsoft's content. Microsoft.com basically has an infinite amount of content, and figuring out how to retire content and have a life cycle policy is is important because the company just keeps cranking more stuff out without thinking about the things that are already there, Volk said. Another challenge, according to Volk, is enterprise or site-wide initiatives - anything from standard redirect policies to how Microsoft handles localization, and really trying to build things once so that they can be deployed across a number of different initiatives to be able to see the impact every single time that process or solution comes together and runs, Volk said.

Get the Flash Player to see this content.

Volk, who spoke on the topic of in-house seo, said the take-aways from the session included recommending businesses start their SEO efforts by building a framework. Then it's important to understand all the areas that can be touched and the areas of SEO that can be controlled within your business, Volk continued. Determining the areas where opportunity analysis can be done and making a prioritized list of them is a good way to find the low-hanging fruit to go after aggressively in order to show success, Volk said. By documenting these results and turning them into case studies, you've got evidence to then move forward with larger projects, Volk added. This is how to build momentum and increase the scale of a project, Volk noted.

Volk suggested that marketing should build two dashboards. The first is an executive-level one comprised of three to five SEO metrics for everyone in the organization to see, especially C-level and senior managers, Volk said. The second is a line-level dashboard for employees who work daily with SEO, featuring a richer set of metrics and more customized data, Volk noted. Then Volk suggested looking at incremental tools and things that augment your processes. Volk said that Microsoft uses services from several third-party providers, including BrightEdge, which brings in significant amounts of rich data from search engines, and other tools from firms including Omniture and Webtrends for certain side-side analytics, to help provide a more robust view of what is going on. Executing this method will allow one to chase smaller opportunities as you really nail the big things on your list and your backlogs tends to shrink, said Volk.

Exciting things on the horizon for search include social signals, according to Volk. If you look at the way in which social content is starting to permeate search engines, whether it's Bing or Google, it's fundamentally changing how content gets represented in search, he added. As SEO's, we only think about our own site when in fact we need to be thinking about how people are speaking about us because that more and more often is becoming part of the results and people tend to trust results from people we know, so we really have to take a step back and think about how social is really changing the landscape of SEO and how it's going to change the content that we touch, Volk concluded.

Roxanne Darling of Bare Feet Studios Talks Upcoming Pubcon Paradise Conference

posted on, Jan 19, 2012

Pubcon video content producer Vanessa Zamora spoke with Bare Feet Studios co-founder Roxanne Darling and discussed the upcoming Pubcon Paradise conference taking place in Honolulu February 14-15, 2012. Darling suggested Pubcon attendees utilize Yelp in order to find suggestions for good local restaurant options. The local food movement and sustainability are really big in Hawaii, according to Darling, especially because the island is so remote. Darling highly recommended a locally-sourced restaurant called Town, whose chef and owner Ed Kenney can be found on Twitter as @edstown.

Sheila Beal and Darling will speak during Pubcon Paradise on the topic of travel and tourism, specifically discussing the recently concluded New Media Artist-in-Residence Program, a travel blogger project consisting of seven bloggers that was highly successful for Lanai, the island on which it was based. Lessons learned from that program can transfer to all businesses that work in the consumer marketplace, in that a mutual two-way collaboration can work well for all parties involved if it's a well thought out, creative plan that utilizes social media in an innovative way, Darling said.

Get the Flash Player to see this content.

Darling, who started with "Beach Walks With Rox," now wears multiple hats in her every day work life, and discussed time management as a busy Internet professional. Over the holidays time was spent mapping out all work-related responsibilities that included 17 or 18 blocks of things to be accomplished in a week, Darling shared. Clifford Nass, a researcher at Stanford University, has said that our ability to respond to constant interruptions is making us less efficient and more stressed, according to Darling, who said she used to just want to go with the flow and trust that the important things would show up front and center, but now is learning to manage the flow and schedule blocks of time to which she adheres. The brain is able to orient around 15 minute blocks of time without interruption much better, Darling said.

Darling encouraged all of the Pubcon Paradise attendees to connect with her on Twitter, where she is @roxannedarling.

Raven Internet Marketing Tools Arienne Holland at Pubcon Las Vegas 2011

posted on, Jan 18, 2012

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Send Gmail Post to LinkedIn Post to StumbleUpon

During Pubcon Las Vegas 2011 Raven Internet Marketing Tools communications director Arienne Holland, who has been working for Raven just over a year now, sat down with Pubcon video content producer Vanessa Zamora to discuss newly released Raven social media monitoring tools that include a monitor and stream, both powered by UBERVU, a third party data source that draws data from 20-plus sources including Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Disqus, as well as newspapers.

Get the Flash Player to see this content.

Holland said that the social monitor tool works in a way that enables the user to program any keyword into it and get down to the level of determining which Twitter influencers are discussing that specific keyword. The user can also monitor specific authors to track when particular people mention a given keyword, added Holland. Social stream is unique in that Facebook and Twitter generally are combined into some sort of tool, but Raven instead took the social media management and the monitoring from the social media monitor tool and put them in one view, so the user can keep up with certain words in real time, keep tabs on what they are discussing, and assign tasks or even post directly from the tool, Holland said.

Holland, who spoke on leveraging blog comments and reviews during Pubcon, said a lot of people — especially experienced Internet marketers — know how to work comments for their own websites, but what she doesn't see a lot of information on is how to be a good commenter on external websites and how one can use that to grow their business. Holland, who calls this theme the Little Dog's Guide to Blog Commenting, said that instead of commenting with articles that are interesting on a personal level, remember that it's important to go and comment where the customers are or where our clients' customers are, because if you can educate them you are more likely to be seen as an expert, and those people are the ones who are actually going to buy the product. It takes additional time, but in the long run it's going to pay off, Holland concluded.
